Raised from the dead on the 3rd day
Matthew 28:1-4
Now after the Sabbath, as the 1st day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and was going to the tomb to rollback the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
Raised from the dead on the 3rd day, there was a violent earthquake, an angel came down from heaven and rolled back the stone from the door and sat on it. Mary Magdalene, who Jesus healed of evil spirits and infirmities and the “other Mary “Jesus mother’s sister, Salome, the mother of the sons of Zebedee -James and Jose, went to see the tomb after the first day of the week, when the sun had risen.
They brought spice as customary to anoint His body. The women looked up and saw the tomb had been rolled away said to themselves who roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us? For they did not see the angel sitting on the tomb-their eyes may have been restrained from seeing the angel, similar to how the disciples eyes were restrained from seeing Jesus on their way to Emmaus until He opened their eyes in the breaking of bread- nor did they know scripture that He must rise again from the dead. On the other hand, the guards saw the angel sitting on the tomb as oppose to the women and were shaken with fear because of the glory of the Lord shone around them; the angel appearance was like lightning and his cloth as white as snow.
Matthew 27:56
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Mark 15:40
Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.
Luke 9:56
When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them. But Jesus turned and rebuked them. The Son of Man is not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them and they went to another village.
Mark 16:1
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.
Mary Magdalene stooped down and looked into the tomb; she and the other women enter the tomb and saw a young man clothed in a long white robe – his countenance like lightning and his cloth as white as snow-on the right side and they were alarmed. Mary Magdalene saw 2 angels standing by them ,one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. The angels asked Mary Magdalene, why she was crying and she said they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid Him. (John 20:11-13) The angels said to Mary Magdalene, other Mary, and Salome why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, He is Risen. Remember, how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee saying, “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and the 3rd day ,rise again. And they remembered His words:
“Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raised it 3 days. They replied, “It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and you are going to raised it in 3 days?” But the temple He had spoken of was His body. After He was raised from the dead, His disciples recalled what He had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.(Luke 24:1:8)
Pause and think:
- Is the Jewish Sabbath day and the Lord’s Day one and the same?
- What is the significance of the first day of the week?
- How many angels convey the message of resurrection to the women at the tomb?
- Do ministering spirit age ? (Mark 16:5)
- How many women had firsthand knowledge of Christ resurrection?
- Who were present in tomb after Christ resurrection? (Mathew 28:2, Mark 16:5,Luke 24:1, 4, John 20: 11-12,14)
Eye Witnesses of Jesus Resurrections
Matthew 28:16
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
Luke 24:36
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
John 20:16-18
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
John 20:19-20
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord
John 20:26
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
John 21:1-2
Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.
1 Corinthians 15:5-7
And that He appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all He appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
Matthew 28:5-7
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Go quickly and tell His disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
Raised from the dead on the 3rd day, the angel of the Lord rendered heaven salutation to the women “ Do not be afraid” even though they had a valid reason for being afraid, an angel was present, whose clothing was as white as snow and there was an earth quake, with lightning. Yet, the angel said to them “Do not be afraid, Jesus who was crucified, He is not here, He has risen, just as He said “ This must have reinforced Christ message “Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God also believe in me to Mary. The angel, a servant of Christ, announced the prophetic message of Christ resurrection “He is Risen” to Mary Magdalene and the other women and told them to “Go quickly and tell the disciples” that He is Risen from the dead and indeed He is going before them in Galilee; there they will see Him. Behold I have told you. The angle of the Lord of, in another instance, the announced, the birth of Christ to the shepherds : Do not be afraid.I bring good news that will cause great joy for all people. Today int he town of David a Savior has been born to you, he is Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you:you will find a baby wrapped in cloths lying in a manager. The Shepherds went with haste to tell Mary and Joseph in Judea all the Lord had made known to them. Raised from the dead on the 3rd day, the women went quickly and with exhilarating emotion of fear and joy, they ran and told the 11 disciples and all the rest (Luke 24:9) including Peter, John, (John 20:2) and the 2 disciples (Luke 24:13) who were on their way to Jerusalem the same day. The women told all the disciples the good news: “He is Alive”: He was delivered up because of our offenses and was raised because of our justification” (Romans 4:25) Therefore, we are justified by faith, we have peace with God, who raised Jesus from the dead to save us from our sin, (Matthew 1:21), God who give us His Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 15:50) and save us by His life (1 Corinthians 15:45). This testimony still stands true today: we are to tell everyone about the love of God, starting with Christ disciples and tell them about Jesus Christ who died for our sins, was buried, and God raised Him from the dead on the 3rd day according to scripture; He was seen by many eyes witnesses over a span of 40 days after resurrection as a sure foundation of our faith.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:9-10
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. With the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 5:1-2
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through whom we have access by faith, into this grace in which we stand and rejoice in the hope of Glory of God.
1 John 11-12
And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
John 6:6
The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life
Romans 8:11
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the deal will give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Pause & think
- How many disciples did Jesus appear to after resurrection? (John 21:14, 1 Corinthians 15:6-8)
- What was the duration of His appearance after resurrection? (Acts 1:3)
- What was Christ prophetic message of His resurrection? (Mathew 16:21, 20:19, 26:61, Luke 24:7, Mark 9:31,Mark 10:34, Luke, 18:33, 24:46, John 11: 25-26)
Matthew 28-8-10
So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
Raised from the dead on the 3rd day, Magdalene, the other Mary and Salome were on their way to convey the good news with mixture emotion of joy and fear, Jesus met them along the way and said to them: Rejoice! And the women held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. For Jesus gives us victory over sin, death and grave, He is worthy of worship. “Death is swallow up in victory.” Jesus told the women not to fear, for His perfect love cast out fear. He commanded them to go and tell His brothers the good news: He is Alive; they should go to Galilee and there they will see Him. And Jesus told Mary: Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father, but go to My brethren, and say to them ‘ I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”(John 20:17)
(John 14:7)
1 Corinthians 15:56-57
The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law.But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 2:14
Now thanks be to God who always lead us in triumph in Christ and through us diffuse the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
Matthew 28:16-20
Then the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain, which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jesus many a times went to a mountain to pray and commune with our Father. A focus will be place on 3 significant mountains: on the Mountain of Beatitude near the Sea of Galilee, Jesus prayed all night to God and the next day He choose His disciples to Himself whom He also named apostles. He preached the Sermon on the Mount- title the Beatitude-this should be your attitude- to His disciples and the multitude of people. (Mathew 5:1,11, mark 3:13, Luke 6:12-26)
On Mount Hermon, in the region of Caesarea Philippi, near Galilee, Jesus took Peter, James and John to Mount Hermon. (Matthew 16:13, 17:1, Mark 8:27, 9:1) He was transformed before them, His face shone like the sun, his cloth became white as light… He met with Moses and Elijah to depict the fulfillment of the law and the prophet. God also testified Jesus is the beloved Son in whom He is well pleased. Upon hearing this disciples were frighten and Jesus told them to arise and not be afraid. And when the disciples lifted their face they saw no one but Jesus, who commanded them to “Tell the vision to no one unto the Son of Man is risen from the dead”.
Also on Mount Hermon in Caesarea Philippi, God revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. In addition, Jesus revealed to Peter that He is the rock on which He would build His church and the gates to Hades shall not prevail against it. Jesus also told Peter, He gave the keys of the kingdom of heaven to him and whatever he bind and loose on earth will be bind and loose in heaven. Jesus commanded His disciples to tell no one that He is “Jesus the Christ”, the Son of the living God. From this time, Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priest and scribes and be killed and be raised the 3rd day” –per-resurrection. (Matthew 16 13-21,17-1-9)
Until the day Jesus was taken up into heaven, He appeared to His disciples on Mount Olives in Jerusalem and He commanded them to tarry in the city of Jerusalem until they are endued with power from on high. He blessed them and ascended into heaven while they worshiped Him– post resurrection- the first born over creation, who has authority over all flesh, the head of principalities and power, the one in whom all the fullness of God dwell, the image of the invisible God and the radiance of His beauty.
While in Jerusalem on Mount Olives, 2 men in white apparel convey the prophetic message of Christ return to His disciple and said: “Men of Galilee why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will so come again in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. (Acts 1:1-11) “He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things” ( Ephesians 4:6)
Let’s think about this :which of these 3 mountains is the designated mountain in Matthew’s account? On the this mountain, Jesus was transformed before His disciple whom God testified saying this is my beloved Son in whom,I am well please. On this mountain, God revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God and Jesus in turn told His disciples all authority has been given to Him in heaven and earth . He reminded them of what He told to Peter: I give you the keys to heaven and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven (Matthew 16:19) and also what He told His disciples in Capernaum “Behold I give you authority to trample on serpent and scorpion and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you( Luke 10:19)
Colossians 1:15-19
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him
Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.
Ephesians 1:19-23
---and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Raised from the dead on the 3rd day, Jesus commanded His disciples: Go and make disciples of all nation, baptizing them in the name of Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to observe all things He had commanded them to do all He had taught them and He promise to be with them even to the end of the age. Who is a disciple of Christ? Disciples of Christ are fisher of men who preached the gospel:”Jesus said: Follow me ,and I will make you fisher of men.” Jesus was born to die to save us from our sin and His disciples admonish men to repent from their sins and turn to God to have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ as a life style. In the making of disciples baptism is done in the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit or in the name of Jesus- its one and the same, for there is only one true God (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:16,Acts 10:48). Disciples of Christ are those who hear the word of God and obey it and they in turn teach others to do likewise. Jesus said: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” Luke 11:28
Jesus also promise to be with His disciples everywhere in everyplace at all times. Disciples of Christ are never alone, because God the Father, (Joshua 1:9) Son (Matthew 28:20) and Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17) is with us always, to the end of the age. Thanks be to God who raised Jesus from the dead to save us from our iniquities ( Acts 3:26),gave us eternal life(John 17:3) and a living hope (1 Peter 1:3) through the resurrection of Christ from the dead. Glory to God for peace He give us through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, now and forever. Amen.
Jesus said: Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. And with that He breathed on them , and said receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:22)
Pause & think
- On what mountain did Jesus choose His disciples?
- On what mountain did Jesus meet His 11 disciples?
- On what mountain was Jesus transfigured?
- Did Jesus bring Peter,James and John on the mountain of transfiguration 6 or 8 days?
- On what mountain did Jesus ascend into heaven?
- Where did Jesus meet His disciples in Jerusalem after His resurrection?
- Where did Jesus meet his disciples in Galilee or Jerusalem after resurrection?
- Who was the first person did Jesus meet on the Day of resurrection?
- What are the benefits of Christ resurrection?
