Luke 24:36-38

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you. “They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?

After the His resurrection, Jesus greeted His disciples with this message “peace be with” you,” -note that He did not use this greeting before the resurrection- as the Lord of peace who has made both Jews and Gentiles one and has broken down the wall of separation and has remove the wrath of God from men. He also spoke peace to the disciples’ trouble and doubtful hearts, to guard their hearts and mind to understand Him. His presence permeated peace to cast out the distress or fear they were experiencing for His peace flows like a river in our soul as we keep our mind stay on Him.  Jesus said, peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give you, let not your heart be trouble neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

Luke 24:39-43

Behold my hands and my feet, it is I myself. Handle me and see me for a spirit does not have flesh and blood as you see I have. When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. But while they still did not believe for joy and marveled, he said to them “Have you any food here?” So they give Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb and He took it and ate it in their presence.

Jesus Christ, the Word of God in the flesh show His hands and feet to His disciples as evidence of His glorified body that overcame death and gives life to those who feed on Him.  Jesus said, most assuredly, I say to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink the His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. Why? Because the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you and that Spirit will raise you up on the last day to overcome death. ( John 6: 54, Romans 8:11)

Jesus the Son of Man ate in the presence of His disciples to bond with them.  This solidify His identity as fully God and fully man- deity in the flesh. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.  Jesus appeared in His glorified body at the table to fellowship, to teach and to give hope to His disciples over a meal. Through this communal He empowered them to be His witness who would preach the gospel and who would testify that He was ordained by God to be the judge of the living and the dead as He foreshadow the feast yet to come.(Acts 10 :40)

And we are witnesses of all things, which He did both in the land of Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. “Him God raised up on the 3rd day” and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that it is He who ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive the remission of sins. (Acts 10:39-43)

Pause &Think

  • What should we preach about Jesus?
  •  (Matthew 10:7-8, John 21:31, Mark 6: 12-13, Luke 9:2,Acts 10:40 -43, Acts 4:12)
  • On the day of resurrection, how many times did Jesus appear to His disciples?
  •  (Mark 16: 9, Luke 24: 13-15, John 20: 14)
  • How many witnesses saw Christ after His resurrection? (1 Corinthians 15:3-8)

Luke 24:44-45

He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

Jesus taught the disciples things that pertain to Him in scripture to clearly show that all scriptures begin and end with Him – He is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.  The righteous requirement of God that could not be fulfilled in the law due to its weakness through the flesh has been revealed and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Lord our righteousness and fulfilled in us by the Holy Spirit.  In addition, all prophetic utterance about the Messiah has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, hence He said I did not come to abolish the law but to fulfilled it. “Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because the works of the law will justify no one.” (Galatians 2:16)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 1: 1-4)

How does the Holy Spirit fulfill the righteous requirement of the law? (Romans 5:22)

Luke 24:46-47: Then He said to them, thus it is written, and thus it was necessary, for Christ to suffer and rise from the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem.

It is written in the psalms, the prophets, the law and fulfilled in the new testament that Christ had to suffered and rise from the dead according to God per-determined purpose and plan for humanity. Jesus commissions His disciples to go to all nations and to every creature and preach the gospel that includes the message of repentance, and remission of sin in His name.

Jesus said: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen (Matthew 28:19-20)

Jesus said: And He said to them: “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover. So then, after the Lord has spoken to them, He was received in heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.  And they went out and preach everywhere, the Lord working with them confirming the word through the accompany signs. Amen. (Mark 16:15-20)

Luke 24:48-51: And you are witness of these things. Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you, but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. And He led them out as far as Bethany and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.

Jesus reminded the disciples of the promise of the Father, who would endue them with power from high to be His witness in Jerusalem, all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.   So If you then, who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. It is the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to be witness of Christ as He reminds us of what Christ said, and He gives utterance to listening ears to proclaim the right word at the right time to convict hearts of sin, judgment and righteousness-“ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Jesus reminded the disciples of the promise of the Father, foreseeing, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which was spoken by the prophet Joel and fulfill in the book of Acts. And this promise was not only for the disciples but also us who believe and our children and to all who are afar off as many as the Lord our God will call. (Joel 2:28-29,32 Acts 2:16-21, 39)

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh

Your sons and your daughter shall prophesy,

Your old men shall dream dreams,

Your young men shall see visions

And also on my menservants and on my maidservant

I will pour out my spirit in those days.

How did the disciples respond in the presence of Jesus?

Matthew 28:17: when they saw Him, they worship Him, but some doubted.

Mark 16:20: And they went out and preach everywhere, the Lord working with them confirming the word through the accompany signs

Luke: 24:52: And they worship Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen

John 20: 20, 31: When He said this, He show them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord…

But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God and that believing you may have life in His name.
